Mysterious journey: How did this seal pup end up in a farmer's paddock with cows more than 35 km from the coast?

A baby fur seal is recovering at Adelaide Zoo, after being found 35km from the sea in a cattle farm on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

A local farmer made the surprise discovery on Tuesday morning, when he was checking up on his cows which were acting strangely in the paddock. The male fur seal, weighing only 8.8kg was found laying next to a fence among his cows - a long way from where he belongs.

It is a mystery how the baby fur seal ended up at the farm in Bletchley, between Strahalbyn and Woodchester.

The closest lake is Lake Alexandrina, 20km away, while the sea is a 35km hike away from where the seal was found.

The Environment Department was called to the rescue, and the mammal was then transferred to Adelaide Zoo to undergo veterinary checks.

Adelaide Zoo kept the seal overnight and will be monitoring him closely over the next few days, hoping to release him back into the wild as soon as he puts on some weight.

There are less than 15,000 wild fur seals in Australia, most of which live in South Australia.
